Friday the 16h at Kellys - He's Back!

For all the old regulars, I thought you would like to know that Jimmy Keagan will be at Kellys this Friday!

We don't want to miss that. See you all there.

A magic night!

It was quite an unusual night at Kelly's Irish Pub on Friday night. Just when I think I've heard the various musicians in Vero and the various combinations when they jam, a new piano man turns up.  I had heard Mark Farner play at the Moose jam last Sunday and 'bribed' him to come over to play my new keyboard and then check out Kelly's. "But do they just play Irish music?" this transplanted Chicagoan asked, doubtfully.
I laughed. "No, I don't think Deja Vu plays a lot of Irish music."

I introduced Mark to Vince and Eddie and after a little musician to musician two-stepping around, Mark ended up behind the keyboard and Vince was standing behind the mic with his guitar.

Mark really seemed to be enjoying himself and played with an exciting energy and Vince was able to throw himself into singing and playing guitar. Eddie of course did his thing on the drums.

The room was rocking along, really enjoying this unexpected combination when Marschall Van Doren walked in. Vince recruited him too and soon Marschall was behind the keyboard with Mark and it got even wilder!

What a magic moment to hear these excellent musicians come together and give us all a great concert. Vero does have great musicians so come on out. You never know who will show up!

Giving thanks for a fine live music week!

I hope you enjoyed the Thanksgiving holiday with family and friends. I certainly enjoyed the live music I heard around town this week.
I started out by going to the Fort Pierce American Legion where Marschall Van Doren was entertaining the lovely people there with his singing and keyboard playing as he does a couple of times a month. Marschall does a variety of songs, old standbys and favorites and I arrived just in time to sing a few tunes with him. It was worth the drive.

Wednesday - I started out at Havana Nights and caught a bit of Bobby Gangloff (of Bobby and the Blisters) rockin' the piano there. He is always so entertaining with what I perceive to be a type of  New Orleans style of singing and playing - and he's a really nice guy too.

I had run into some friends at Havana and we soon joined up again at Waldo's on the beach where Voodoo was playing outside by the pool. Wonderful weather, beautiful night and oh my, such great sounds! Jimmy Smith and Lee Rathbun of course and Rick Collins singing and drumming. There was an outstanding bass player but I didn't get his name.  Kent Taylor Brown sat in on guitar, (and probably vocals) but I arrived just as he was wrapping up that set so I missed it. It was a perfect Florida night, black sky and lots of stars to be seen from the deck.

Thursday was Thanksgiving so I didn't get my Kent Taylor Brown fix at the weekly Live Music Party at Dockside Grille. I guess he thought spending time with Emmy and the family was more important than catering to the needs of his fans! Imagine that...

But oh well, I caught up with him on Friday night at the Eagles on Old Dixie. I was joined there by Melinda McKee Branand and we both sang a couple with Kent before cruising over to Kelly's Irish Pub on Miracle Mile to hear the inimitable Vince Caporale and Ed D'Angelo of Deja Vu. They were especially hot and in fact that's how they ended the evening - they had the whole room up dancing to "Hot Hot Hot!"

It is just amazing how much great live music there is to be enjoyed in Vero in just a span of 4 days. But wait...there's more!

The very busy, Marschall Van Doren played at the Vero Beach Vets on Saturday evening and I got to do a few songs with him there. And then on Sunday, I thought I'd go by the Moose Lodge up on 43rd Ave. to see what was happening at the weekly jam session.  I am so glad I did!

All the guys from Tightrope were there with several other musicians  sitting in. There was of course, the infamous Jimmy Smith on bass and vocals, always a pleasure to hear; Marshall Law sitting in on drums when I arrived with Tightrope drummer, Dave Goddard on hand nearby; Albert Andrews, drummer with Stevie and the Hotrods, played some acoustic guitar and sang "Barefoot Bluejeans Night" for one, but also did several more songs - and did them justice. Also in on the jam was a really accomplished lead guitarist, Holt Sutherland. When I heard the sounds he was making on that guitar, I had to get a little closer just to watch him do it!

The  musician that I always enjoy hearing was the piano player, Mark Farner. I got up close again because its a thrill to see his hands doing their work on those keys! Mark is gigging with bands in the area, like Wall Manning and the Revelers and Dave and the Wave at Waldo's. And of course, Tightrope. To get his schedule, E mail him at markpianoman@gmail.com

The grand finale was amazingly good and I knew I was going to like it when Jeff Schoff of Tightrope, started singing a song I didn't know but really liked called "Just To Satisfy You." Jimmy Smith accompanied him on vocals and all the musicians did solos including Mr. Rick Nelson on slide guitar.

Somehow it all came together on that number and it was what jams are all about - suddenly it gets exciting and the music comes alive. Thanks guys, I hope I get to hear you do that again sometime.

Mid Week Pile-up!

A beautiful Wednesday in Vero and there are at least two events tonight, if not three, for your consideration:

There is of course, VooDoo at Waldo's on the beach, always a great time with those great musicians and it should be a beautiful night by the ocean.

But also, making their debut at the Vero Beach Sports Bar on the east side of U.S.1, (in the McDonalds area) is the wonderful band, Deja Vu, with Vince and Eddie! This should be fun and there will be some of the Kelly's and Dockside crowd there, ready to dance and sing. So come by if you can. They start at 8pm 'til 10pm, and I should be there by 8:30. Let's party!

Note: Deja Vu appears every Friday evening, 8pm to 11pm at Kelly's Irish Pub on Miracle Mile.

Also, got a notice from Bodega Blue on 14th Ave. - they have Bruce Threkland playing tonight, I don't know his music, but its always interesting to see what this sweet little cheese bar has to offer. He starts at 7pm.

I feel so lucky to have these talented musicians in Vero, so nice to be able to go out and get into the vibe and see friendly faces of people enjoying the old favorites.  When you listen closely to the work the musicians are doing, you realize how much experience and talent they bring to each event. Let's support what we love.

And speaking of music we love: hope to see you all at the Dockside 'Live Music Party' tomorrow night with Kent Taylor Brown! I hear we will also have Mr. Marschall Van Doren sitting in on keyboards! Should be a good time.

Florida Fall Sunday

Hello live music lovers,

This is the beautiful Florida weather we sweated out the summer for, so hope you can get out and enjoy it. Leave the chores 'til later; I just decided to -- because I'm going down to Gloria Estafans Costa D'Este hotel on Ocean Drive to hear the wonderful Bobby and the Blisters band starting at about 4pm 'til about 8pm.  Should be beautiful on the ocean today with all that blue sky and crisp fall air.

If I'm ambitious enough, I just might ride my bike from South Beach to Central Beach for the pleasure and the exercise.

See you there?
For more info about this event, scroll down to the "Sunday Surprise" post and read about Bobby and the band.

Few and Far Between

Hello all,

And then of course, Voodoo on Wednesdays at Waldos.
And Bobby and the Blisters at Coste d'Este on Ocean on Sunday afternoons.

Counting heads

Hello people,

I was just wondering how many people are reading this blog at this point, as infrequent and incomplete as it is. Could you let me know.
Don't mess with the COMMENTS thingy below, just send a quick note to the verobeachlive at gmail.com and I'll get it for sure.
Stay tuned...things change. Notice the new "Where Are These Clubs and Bars?" at the top.

Loving the live music scene in Vero. Thursdays, 8:30 at Dockside; Fridays at Kelly's, Wednesdays at Waldo's - and some other venues are starting up. I'll let you know - when I know.
Tricia

ps. I'll be looking for your note at VEROBEACHLIVE at gmail.com.  (I disabled the link because it asks for some weird info about 'pop' something or other. Complicated! For now, just type it in and send. Thanks)

Havana Nights - Who plays when

Havana Nights, over on Jasmine off of Ocean Drive, near the 17th street bridge, is upstairs in the Caribbean Court Hotel and what a fun place for a late dinner or a drink at the bar. It's classy, so wear something dressy casual, but the ambiance is worth the trouble.

This bar takes me back to the 50's, to 'Casablanca' and a little more stylish period. The lighting is subdued, the beautiful bird and tropical paintings over white booths make for intimate dining and the wood bar with cushy bar stools just makes stopping into Havana Nights a real pleasure.

And there's always live music! At this piano bar you will find:

Neal McHugh - Mon, Tues, and Thursdays.
Bobby Gangloff - Wednesdays
Antonio York  -  Fridays and Sundays
Lisa Addeo - Saturdays.

Each musician has a special style and type of music so be sure to hear each one.
Music generally starts around 6 pm ...until...

I try to stop in at Havana Nights at least twice a week to enjoy a nice Chardonay to end off the day, talk with friends and hear some really professional live music. In fact, there I was on Wednesday evening sitting between Marschall Van Doren, keyboardist, singer and trombone player, and Neal McHugh who also sings and plays keyboards and guitar.

What a treasure this place is. Hope to run into you there soon.

And if I'm not there, tell the bartender, Dan, that Tricia sent you. He'll take good care of you.

Sunday Surprise!

Okay live music lovers,

If you think there's not much going on in Vero on Sundays, you have quite a surprise in store! Gloria has it going on!

I wandered down to Gloria Estefan's Costa d'Este Hotel on Ocean Avenue at about 5pm to check out the happy hour tapas menu since I didn't feel like cooking. What I walked into was a party in full swing!

Bobby Gangloff's, Bobby and the Blisters band was set up outside by the pool - Bobby on keyboard with his special old type microphone (that reminds me of a chrome hood grill),  Tony Cruz on Bongos, Todd Walker on Drums and Ron McCode on saxaphone - and they were hot, hot, hot! I love that jazzy blues sound and, though I've heard Bobby play and sing at Havana Nights often, this was a different sound since, out by the ocean, he can turn up the volume and really let himself go.

That keyboard better be made of titanium or some such metal because sometimes Bobby looked like a musical version of an extreme fighter up there, really coming down on those keys, especially when he did a song called 'Use Me Up'. The band went wild and so did the dancers!

I like Bobby's strong but smooth and melodious voice, telling stories with songs like "Maple to Mango," (I think it was called), and the Steeley Dan favorite, "Deacon Blues." Some of his songs have a very fast rhythm but the way he enunciates so clearly, you can hear every word.

And, my friends, this marvelous party happens every Sunday, from 4 'til 8pm. Happy hour for drinks goes until 6pm; there is comfortable seating in this beautiful setting with the ocean as a backdrop; nice people of all ages, light food and pleasant and efficient servers.

And really great live music! What more could you ask?

Kelly's - like the 'good old days!'

What a treat to have Jimmy Keagan back at Kelly's this past Friday night! We love Deja Vu, but they had something else going on, so Jimmy came back to entertain all of his old followers and it was quite a night.

Everybody sang: Harvey, Frank, Johnny, Kim, Maggie and Tommy, Mary (others I've left out, sorry) and even I sang a couple.

When Jimmy backs you up on that 'rag time' piano, he makes it easy for the singers. There arn't many songs he doesn't know and he can find your key if you don't know it. His wife, Diane, keeps a note of it in her trusty book for next time. She also writes down the names of 'regulars' when they walk through the door and they're
called up to sing depending on what time they arrived.

Jimmy is a great singer himself and had a lot of requests for his old favorites.

When Verobeachlive.com is functioning fully, (with a calendar and all), I will be sure to let you know when the wonderful Jimmy Keagan is making an appearance at Kelly's Irish Bar and Deli.

Meanwhile, I'll just continue blogging about Vero's live music scene.

Where's the music?

Hello live music lovers! I took a time out to handle the virus and also am looking for someone to handle the tech side of creating this blog so we have a reliable calendar and can stay on-line regardless of 'bugs,' etc.
I am interviewing now, so hopefully we will be back in 'bidness' soon.

Stay tuned!

Off line for a short while

Just when it was getting fun - suddenly the ugly virus on the computer! I am off line until I can get it taken care of. Be back soon.
Meanwhile - find the music and enjoy!

Happy September 1st

Hello live music lovers,

Reminding you - no Kent Taylor Brown at Dockside tonight due to minor (thank goodness) illness. He'll be back next Thursday for the "Live Music Party" at Dockside starting at 8:30 pm 'til close.

I got a notice from Johnny "B" - a really gifted bass player and the nicest person - that he's going to be at Waldo's open mic session tonight, starting at 7pm.  Everyone is invited to either join in the jam or just enjoy the music.

Tell your musician friends to E-mail me at verobeachlive@gmail.com to let me know of any engagements they want everyone to know about. I'll be glad to post it.

Have a great Labor Day Weekend!

About Dockside Grille

I just received notice that there will be no 'Live Music Party' at Dockside on Thursday due to minor illness. Big disappointment, but I'm in the middle of moving anyway, so...I'll have to celebrate all that next Thursday!

Wishing a fast recovery to all involved.

Havana Nights should be open though as they finish their renovations on Wednesday evening. Singing piano players every night of the week.

And of course, lots of good music at Waldo's on the beach. Rick Collins, the wonderful singing drummer, wanted me to remind people that Voodoo is starting at 7pm and that Waldo's is a good place to stay dry and enjoy some exciting sounds.

A quick note

I'm a little out of the loop right now (packing and moving) so if anyone knows of a music event, let me know. verobeachlive@gmail.com

Riverside has Steven and Joe tonight;  always good food, a river view and the sunset.

And of course, Wanda hosts Karaoke at What-A-Tavern on Royal Palm Pointe.

Here's a bit of music news I saw on line: CHICAGO — Grammy-winning Blues musician David "Honey Boy" Edwards, believed to be the oldest surviving Delta bluesman and whose roots stretched back to blues legend Robert Johnson, died early Monday in his Chicago home, his manager said. He was 96.

I'm not familiar with Mr. Edward's music but maybe some of you are. Worth a look-see on Youtube. Sounds like a music man who lived a long life, playing and singing the blues. Sounds like a good one to me!

I almost forgot: Marschall Van Doren is entertaining at the American Legion -vocals and keyboard - 810 S. U.S. 1 in Ft. Pierce,(772-461-1480) starting, I believe, at 7pm.  I'm pretty sure its open to the public - at any rate I'll drop in at about 8pm since I promised to sing a few songs.

I know, I know, I don't have all the details yet, but that will happen soon enough. Right now, bare bones info...until I'm settled into my new digs. We'll be seriously up to date by start of season - which won't be that long! Stay tuned.

Speaking of Ft. Pierce, the incredible Jazz &Blues Society at the Black Box, attached to the Sunrise theater on 2nd Ave., has a fantastic jam session tonight. It starts at 7:30 and only $5 admission.

Monday, Monday, so good to me...

I hope Monday is good to you, also.

I'm moving this week, so won't get to do a lot of 'music hopping' but please let me know if there is live music (or karaoke) happening that you would like to see posted.

I should soon have Kent Taylor Brown's Sept. schedule as well as Rick Collins and others.

For sure, Waldo's on the beach with Voodoo on Wednesday and Dockside Grille has Kent Taylor Brown on Thursday.

Sunday music?

Hello Music Lovers,

Hope you had a good Friday and Saturday, watching the storm we didn't have cruise on up north, making people  scramble to keep their heads above water as we have done  too often in the past. Whew! I, personally, was in no mood for a hurricane!
(This is moving week for me, so...Vero music news will be slim for a while.)

A couple of things you might check out today:

24/ Steven and Joe at Riverside Cafe under the bridge, starting at 6pm.  These two generate some good music and it's a great place to watch the sunset and check out the 'folks.'

Someone sent me a notice about 'Open mic' at the VB Sports Grille on U.S. 1, starting at 6pm..but I haven't been able to reach anyone to confirm that.

But you can count on the Sunday jam session at the Moose Lodge with Tightrope on 43rd ave, starting at 4:00 pm.

Also, the jam session at the Vero Beach Veterns, Inc. probably hosted by the Andrews Brothers, on 15th ave. /at 26th street, starting at 4:30 pm.

Waldo's on the beach has Hair Peace, (I've never heard them) from 1pm to 5pm.  Always nice to spend a few hours at Waldo's to check out the ocean.

Go to Same Time, Same Place, for scheduled music.

At Waldo's - Rhythm and blues band

Nasty Habits was at Waldo's last night. It was clear where the band's name came from when Mike Presutti, vocalist and guitar player sang the song of the same name by Tony Castro. " All my nasty habits just won't let me be."  Mike looks like he was never plagued by a bad habit in his life and must visit the gym daily. He puts his great voice into each song and that's nothing compared to the way he makes his guitar sing, scream and wail!

It didn't hurt to be backed up by Rick Collins on drums and Chuck Shoat on bass, two musicians from the Voodoo band.
Nasty Habits is a non-stop, hard rocking rhythm and blues band and if you like to dance to music that just doesn't let up, this is the band for you.  An energetic woman, Susie, kept coaxing me out on the floor and I ended up getting my workout and having a great time!

Some of the songs:  "Cold Shock" (by Stevie Ray Vaughn); "Rock It Baby" - like your back ain't got no bones; "Gravity;" "Some Kind of Wonderful" (by Grand Funk Railroad); "Blues is My Business" - and business is good!; "Ain't Gonna Tell You About My Good Thing" and "If Life Don't Kill You, Lovin' Will."  Mike also sang a couple of his original songs, one of which was "Get Your Head on Straight."

I didn't make it over to Kelly's - I guess it was unrealistic to think I'd be able to walk away from all that energy and great rhythm and blues sounds once I got into it. But I bet they had a great time over there with Deja Vu. Maybe somebody will write me at verobeachlive@gmail.com and tell me all about it.

TGIF!

Another Friday and 'where's the music?'

There is quite a bit of choice out there and now that Irene is past, it might be clearer out than last night. The rain, however, didn't dampen the 'live music party' at Dockside, there were quite a few of us enjoying the music of Kent Taylor Brown and Peter Armfield.

Tonight, I'm stopping by Waldo's on the beach to hear 'Nasty Habits' (8pm to 11pm) deliver some blues; then, zip over to Kelly's on Miracle Mile to check out 'Deja Vu' (8pm to 11pm)or possibly take in some more Kent Taylor Brown at the Eagles (7pm to 11pm.)

Hope to see you at one of those venues!

"Live Music Party" at Dockside

Its Thursday again and I'm looking forward to a nice evening starting at 8:30 at Dockside Grille on Royal Palm Pointe, grooving with the sounds of Kent Taylor Brown - and maybe friends.
See you there!
Don't forget, half price on well drinks and draft beers and wine after 9:30. Yummy Nite Bites menu, too.

Rockin' at Waldo's

Hello Live Music Lovers,

There was an extra bit of excitement last night as Voodoo was setting up for the show. Not only was there a strong breeze coming in off the ocean and the feeling of a passing storm, but there was Richard of Richard King media, with all of his electronic equipment. Oh yes, they're professionally recording tonight's performance!

Normally in today's music world there are plenty of high tech gizmos all around the musicians, but when Richard is around, it's a veritable 'spaghetti' of various colored cords coming and going from some very strange looking machines. But the result is great recording and hopefully we'll soon have samples of Voodoo and other artists for you to listen to right here.

Singing drummer
Rick Collins

And what music it was last night! Started right off with a John Lennon song, "I'm Losing You" sung by Lee Rathbun. Very nice. Then drummer Rick Collins did "You Don't Know What Its Like" by the BeeGees. I hear an Eric Clapton lilt in his voice when Rick sings that song. Chuck Shoaf, Voodoo's amazing bass player, sang "Brown Eyed Girl."

There was a good crowd milling around at break, enjoying the outdoors bar and the deck overlooking the ocean. A really nice mix of people - from the hippie beach folk to local business people. Kent Taylor Brown and a musican friend, Nicholas from Melbourne, stopped by for a while.

Met Donnie Coleman, (who sang a few songs), and learned that he and Jimmy Smith, the incredible lead guitar player with Voodoo, have about 8 songs on Youtube. Check it out.

After break, some of the songs Voodoo did were: Pink Floyd's, "Wish You Were Here;" some Grateful Dead such as "Ripple", "Friend of the Devil" and "West LA Fade Away." Donnie Coleman sang Gary Stewart's "An Empty Glass" and I can't begin to describe Jimmy Smith's guitar playing on that one. You've just got to hear it for yourself.

They wrapped it up with Steely Dan's "Show Business Kids." Great energy on this mostly instrumental song. Chuck did some surprising things on the bass, it looked like Rick really had it in for those drums, while Jimmy and Lee were like guitar dualing roosters in the back. Great fun and great sounds.
Don't miss Voodoo at Waldo's on the beach, Wednesday, 7pm to 10pm, next week!

Wednesday and 'Where's the Music?"

Don't forget Voodoo at Waldo's on the beach this evening, Aug. 24th, starting at 7pm. ( For more about this great band, see the archives to your right and scroll down to "Wednesdays at Waldo's" dated August 18th.)

Come on down to hear Voodoo and maybe they'll sing "Goodnight Irene" to celebrate the storm cruising on by us. Well, maybe not...

I liked this from my friend, Capt. Frank Gavin:
Give a person a fish and you feed them for a day,
teach a person to use the Internet... and they won't bother you for weeks!

 Here's a heads up for tomorrow -
"Live Music Party" at Dockside Grille on Royal Palm Pointe

Kent Taylor Brown
Man at work!

You just never know what's going to happen at Dockside Grille on Thursday night. But one thing's certain: Kent Taylor Brown will entertain us with some great songs and a variety of musical instruments. He's an excellent keyboardist and singer and then - surprise! - he's playing the saxophone and accompanying himself on the piano. Or there could suddenly be a beautiful flute melody filling the room.

Some evenings, one or two musician friends come in to jam with him. One night it's someone with a trombone, the next it may be a member of a local band playing the guitar or maybe it's a 'guest artist' who sings a few songs. You just never know. For me, it always feels like a party on Thursday night!

So come on by Dockside at 8:30 on Thursday and run into old friends, make some new ones and enjoy the atmosphere.

[For a little more about the flavor of the Live Music Party, see the archives "Thursday Night at Dockside", dated Friday Aug. 19th. and Same Time, Same Place]

Notice:
Havana Nights bar is closed from Wed, 8/24 thru Wed, 8/31 for renovations. Let's all go see it when it's done!

Sleuthing out the music!

Stopped in at a couple of clubs beachside this morning, firming up live music schedules. Of course one of those was Waldo's on the beach. There I spoke with Lee, the guy in charge, because I wanted to know when the blues band, Nasty Habits, was playing.

I found out they are scheduled to play Waldo's, on Friday, August 26th , 8pm to 11pm.  I've heard Mike, from that group, play at a jam at the ''V" and loved his hard-hitting guitar sound and his raunchy blues singing. Also, Rick Collins, a really professional drummer and a great singer, is now with Nasty Habits. Rick is a busy guy, playing with Voodoo, Nasty Habits and various events with Kent Taylor Brown along with other appearances up and down the coast.
Friday should be a special evening out by the pool with the sound of the ocean throwing in a little rhythm of its own.

Also stopped by Havana Nights and confirmed with the wonderful Cynthia, that yes, they have live entertainment - piano players and singers - every night of the week.

This hotel and bar are at such a beautiful location, right off of ocean and Jasmine Ln. The tropical landscaping all around the Carribean hotel is gorgeous! When you go, be sure to tour through the restaurant downstairs before coming upstairs to the bar. Its like a tropical movie set, you will expect to run into Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall having dinner there.

Upstairs is an intimate, classy bar with low lighting, a nicely shaped bar and dinner seating below beautiful tropical paintings of birds and palms. There is a deck for smokers and star gazers. (I'll soon link you to their site with photos.)

The entertainers are:
Bobby of Bobby and the Blisters band; Neil of the River Rats band; Antonio York bringing you New Orleans Jazz; and Lisa who does everything from Diana Krall to Sinatra.
For now, I suggest you take pot luck and enjoy them all, but I'll try to nail down who plays which night exactly.

The Sunday Jam Session

The band that hosted the jam session at the Veterans Club on Sunday was The Andrews Brothers, what I would call a country/rock band.  Albert plays drums and Allen plays guitar and both sing. The third member is the indispensable Johnny B" (Bermsderfer) on bass.  I love to watch his fingers crawl around on those strings!
Johnny told me a bit about his life and I plan to do a feature on him soon.  In fact, next time I attend an event I will take my camera so you can get a view of the guys I'm talking about.

Some of the songs the Andrews Brothers did were "Glass Half Full" which is one of my favorites; "Boot Scootin'"; "Check Yes or No" and "Fast". They also did "God is Great, Beer is Good and People are Crazy," "Born to be Bad" and the Eagle's song, "Take It Easy"

Since it was a jam session, Kevin Emmert from the band, "The Jacks", took over the drums and sang "American Dream."

All in all, an entertaining afternoon. When I was leaving, Patrick ( last name pending) had settled behind the mic with an acoustic guitar at the break and  was singing an Eagles song.

The same band will be there next Sunday. The air, I'm happy to say, was quite clear and breatheable!

Put the "V" on your calendar for Sundays. I told Tiffany, the bar tenderesse, that you all were coming and she said she'd be ready to pour you a cold one or two. And at great prices!

I asked her why the pizza was so good and she told me they were from the Swann company. Makes sense.

End of an exciting musical week!

I must admit, after Waldo's on Wednesday, Dockside on Thursday and Kelly's on Friday, I ran out of steam and didn't make it back to Kelly's for the new karaoke Saturday night opening. I hope it was a big success and maybe someone who did go will tell me all about it.

But I am going to the weekly Sunday afternoon jam session at the Vero Beach Vets today, 4:30 to 8:30. [ On 15th avenue at 25th street, just the other side of the railroad tracks.]
I'm not sure who the core band will be, but bring your instrument or song and join in. A friend of mine plays the guitar and wants me to do a song with him. Should be interesting!
Anyone who has been to the 'V' knows it can be a little bit smokey, but they keep the filters going and there are sections where its almost non-existant.
Vero Beach Veterans - good people, affordable beverages and really nice pizza.   And -- great music! Dance floor, too.

Dear live music lovers,
This blog has only been up and running (toddling?) for a week. Improvements will happen - photos, videos and music samples are coming - it should be fun, so please visit often.
Let me know what is needed and wanted, what needs changing and improved. I want this to be your 'go to' site for local music news and events.

We have talented musicians in Vero, so lets get to know them and support them.
                                                                                                 Thanks.

Breaking News!

Heard last night that Kelly's on Miracle Mile will have Karaoke on Saturdays from 7:30 til...?

This is new, so if you like to sing, join everybody there to kick off this new event. I might be tempted to go by myself and practice a few tunes. I always have a good time at Kelly's.

People were enjoying some delicious sandwiches last night, so you might want to go there to eat, drink and make melody tonight!

Another Great Kelly's Pub Jam!

Hello Vero's live music lovers,

Oh yeah! It was a great night at Kelly's! Vince Caporale and Ed D'Angelo of Deja Vu took us through until about eleven - they played their own great tunes and also played for everyone who wanted to sing.

Harvy Mills, a Kelly's old time regular and a wonderful singer did St. James Infirmary for us; Frank Gavin and his future ex-wife, Cindy (of the Cindy and Sandy twin set) made us all laugh with their rendition of 'Pennies from Heaven' and then - Captain Country, who we don't see enough of at Kelly's, took the floor and did some fun songs in his smoothe, understated country voice.

And just when we thought it was all over, in breezes Kent Taylor Brown, followed by Peter Armfield and his lovely wife, Chris after a 'gig' at the Yacht Club.  The party began all over again! Vince and Eddie still going strong on drums and keyboard, Peter on bass, and Kent once again thrilling us with the sax as they did a wonderful instrumental called, I believe, Cool Man.

Wow. How can we be so lucky? One big room full of happy, dancing, smiling people, Donna and Dawn graciously serving drinks, and four excellent musicians who want nothing more than to entertain us. And we gladly let 'em.

Don't miss whatever happens next Friday at Kelly's on Miracle Mile. Deja Vu will be getting into their first song at 8pm until....? and guest singers will start sharing their special talents with the room.

Note: I believe the way it works to leave a comment is to click on comment below. Give it a try. This is a learn by doing kind of project.

Thursday night at Dockside was great fun! The 'Live Music Party' there just keeps getting better and better.

Of course, Kent Taylor Brown was rockin' the keyboards with Peter Armfield on bass. Suddenly, we had Captain Country behind the mic doing a Johnny Cash song joined by young Joe Decosa with his electric guitar. A real treat when Marschall Van Doren took over the keyboards and vocals and we got to hear Kent on the saxophone! Everybody loves it when Kent plays the sax.

By the time they got to "Johnny Be Good" couples were dancing all around the bar and we didn't wind it down until nearly midnight.

Tonight!
Deja Vu at Kelly's. (8pm to 11pm)  Should be another exciting evening. Better wear my dancing shoes.

TONIGHT!

Here are a few things happening tonight:

Who:  Kent Taylor Brown
Where: Dockside Grille at 41 Royal Palm Pointe

What:  Kent plays and sings all the favorites from the 50's, 60's, 70's; is a musical 'magician' on keyboards, sax and guitar (sometimes more than one of these at a time!) and often has professional  guest artists sit in.

From 9:30 'til close, Dockside has half price on well drinks, wine and draft beer and a Nite Bite menu is available. Come dance, meet friends and have fun with all the regulars in this attractive bar/restaurant. Come in your boat!  You'll be amazed at the incredible talent of Kent Taylor Brown, one of Vero's most talented and skillful musicians!

That's where I'll be tonight!

Waldo's at the beach also has an ongoing Open Mic night, so if you want to participate, show up with your instrument or your songs and join in!

Havana Nights, across from the Chop House, (1603 Ocean Dr, 32963), has the charming Bobby (of Bobby and the Blisters) at the piano, singing in his inimitable style (sometimes he reminds me of Tom Waits) starting at between 6:30pm and 7pm.  Music goes until 12:30 in general but can end at 9:30 or 10pm in summer. Great place for an after dinner drink.

Wednesday at Waldo's

I stopped in at Waldos on the Beach last evening at about 7pm. A big storm was brewing and the sky over the ocean was steel blue and the water was dark but beautiful.
Voodoo was just getting ready to start their first set of the night. Said hello to Rick Collins, the amazing singing drummer, and told him how much I enjoyed meeting his wife, Jillian at VB Sports Bar on Saturday when they both sat in with Kent Taylor Brown. She is a musician also, (Fossil Rockers) among other things like - becoming a doctor!?

What an evening of music with Voodoo! Jimmy (I'll get his last name soon) is just incredible on lead guitar and Lee (ditto on the name) sang some new songs. I only stayed for two sets and I'm glad I wore flats because I stood up a lot. But I like to get right up there where I can feel the music and where I can watch Rick Collins get down on those drums and sing "Hotel California"! I'm sure the bass player (Jeff?) sang one of my favorites, "Glass Half Full" after I left, but...there's always next Wednesday at 7pm for another opportunity to hear Voodoo at Waldo's.
Note: I won't wait until I have all the info, like people's names, etc., but I will get better at finding it out before I report to you - soon! This is just another thing in life that will get better with the doing of it.

SAME TIME, SAME PLACE

Music News

Hello music lovers!

I know you're eager to know about the great live music and other events that are happening in Vero Beach and beyond, so I'll do my best to find out the details and pass them on.
Soon I'll have an E mail address where you can send me info also. And musicians will send in their schedules so it will all be here. Soon!

Meanwhile, some clubs have live music on the same night, every week, featuring the same talent. As I find out about them, I'll put them under this heading:

Same Time, Same Place

which you can find on the right of the blog, under Archives.
I'll update that frequently as schedules change.
Patience is requested as I get this going, but be sure to comment if you want me to be aware of something.

The curtain is up!

Hello music lovers,

Suddenly, the blog is up and running - well, limping along anyway, but - there is progress!

Keep checking in and little by little there will be news to read about local live music. My goal is not to even try to create a calendar that shows every music date in the area. It's to share with you what I've personally found and enjoyed and to let you know where and when some of the live music is happening and who the artists are who make it happen.

I still need to work out an efficient format, but fortunately someone has volunteered to help me figure this out. Her name is Sharon Morgan of SE Morgan Design (another music lover and her husband plays drums)and she is a web site wizard. So if you need any help, contact Sharon at semorgandesign@gmail.com

I'd better get to work tracking down the music!
