About Dockside Grille

I just received notice that there will be no 'Live Music Party' at Dockside on Thursday due to minor illness. Big disappointment, but I'm in the middle of moving anyway, so...I'll have to celebrate all that next Thursday!

Wishing a fast recovery to all involved.

Havana Nights should be open though as they finish their renovations on Wednesday evening. Singing piano players every night of the week. 

And of course, lots of good music at Waldo's on the beach. Rick Collins, the wonderful singing drummer, wanted me to remind people that Voodoo is starting at 7pm and that Waldo's is a good place to stay dry and enjoy some exciting sounds.

Riverside has Steven and Joe tonight;  always good food, a river view and the sunset.

Here's a bit of music news I saw on line: CHICAGO — Grammy-winning Blues musician David "Honey Boy" Edwards, believed to be the oldest surviving Delta bluesman and whose roots stretched back to blues legend Robert Johnson, died early Monday in his Chicago home, his manager said. He was 96.

I'm not familiar with Mr. Edward's music but maybe some of you are. Worth a look-see on Youtube. Sounds like a music man who lived a long life, playing and singing the blues. Sounds like a good one to me!

I almost forgot: Marschall Van Doren is entertaining at the American Legion -vocals and keyboard - 810 S. U.S. 1 in Ft. Pierce,(772-461-1480) starting, I believe, at 7pm.  I'm pretty sure its open to the public - at any rate I'll drop in at about 8pm since I promised to sing a few songs.

I know, I know, I don't have all the details yet, but that will happen soon enough. Right now, bare bones info...until I'm settled into my new digs. We'll be seriously up to date by start of season - which won't be that long! Stay tuned.

Speaking of Ft. Pierce, the incredible Jazz &Blues Society at the Black Box, attached to the Sunrise theater on 2nd Ave., has a fantastic jam session tonight. It starts at 7:30 and only $5 admission.  

Monday, Monday, so good to me...

Sunday music?

Hello Music Lovers,

Hope you had a good Friday and Saturday, watching the storm we didn't have cruise on up north, making people  scramble to keep their heads above water as we have done  too often in the past. Whew! I, personally, was in no mood for a hurricane!
        (This is moving week for me, so...Vero music news will be slim for a while.)

A couple of things you might check out today:

24/ Steven and Joe at Riverside Cafe under the bridge, starting at 6pm.  These two generate some good music and it's a great place to watch the sunset and check out the 'folks.' 

Someone sent me a notice about 'Open mic' at the VB Sports Grille on U.S. 1, starting at 6pm..but I haven't been able to reach anyone to confirm that.

But you can count on the Sunday jam session at the Moose Lodge with Tightrope on 43rd ave, starting at 4:00 pm.   

Also, the jam session at the Vero Beach Veterns, Inc. probably hosted by the Andrews Brothers, on 15th ave. /at 26th street, starting at 4:30 pm.  

Waldo's on the beach has Hair Peace, (I've never heard them) from 1pm to 5pm.  Always nice to spend a few hours at Waldo's to check out the ocean.

At Waldo's - Rhythm and blues band

Nasty Habits was at Waldo's last night. It was clear where the band's name came from when Mike Presutti, vocalist and guitar player sang the song of the same name by Tony Castro. " All my nasty habits just won't let me be."  Mike looks like he was never plagued by a bad habit in his life and must visit the gym daily. He puts his great voice into each song and that's nothing compared to the way he makes his guitar sing, scream and wail!

It didn't hurt to be backed up by Rick Collins on drums and Chuck Shoat on bass, two musicians from the Voodoo band.
Nasty Habits is a non-stop, hard rocking rhythm and blues band and if you like to dance to music that just doesn't let up, this is the band for you.  An energetic woman, Susie, kept coaxing me out on the floor and I ended up getting my workout and having a great time!

Some of the songs:  "Cold Shock" (by Stevie Ray Vaughn); "Rock It Baby" - like your back ain't got no bones; "Gravity;" "Some Kind of Wonderful" (by Grand Funk Railroad); "Blues is My Business" - and business is good!; "Ain't Gonna Tell You About My Good Thing" and "If Life Don't Kill You, Lovin' Will."  Mike also sang a couple of his original songs, one of which was "Get Your Head on Straight." 

I didn't make it over to Kelly's - I guess it was unrealistic to think I'd be able to walk away from all that energy and great rhythm and blues sounds once I got into it. But I bet they had a great time over there with Deja Vu. Maybe somebody will write me at verobeachlive@gmail.com and tell me all about it.

Another Friday and 'where's the music?'

There is quite a bit of choice out there and now that Irene is past, it might be clearer out than last night. The rain, however, didn't dampen the 'live music party' at Dockside, there were quite a few of us enjoying the music of Kent Taylor Brown and Peter Armfield.

Tonight, I'm stopping by Waldo's on the beach to hear 'Nasty Habits' (8pm to 11pm) deliver some blues; then, zip over to Kelly's on Miracle Mile to check out 'Deja Vu' (8pm to 11pm)or possibly take in some more Kent Taylor Brown at the Eagles (7pm to 11pm.)

Rockin' at Waldo's

Hello Live Music Lovers,

There was an extra bit of excitement last night as Voodoo was setting up for the show. Not only was there a strong breeze coming in off the ocean and the feeling of a passing storm, but there was Richard of Richard King media, with all of his electronic equipment. Oh yes, they're professionally recording tonight's performance!

Normally in today's music world there are plenty of high tech gizmos all around the musicians, but when Richard is around, it's a veritable 'spaghetti' of various colored cords coming and going from some very strange looking machines. But the result is great recording and hopefully we'll soon have samples of Voodoo and other artists for you to listen to right here.

And what music it was last night! Started right off with a John Lennon song, "I'm Losing You" sung by Lee Rathbun. Very nice. Then drummer Rick Collins did "You Don't Know What Its Like" by the BeeGees. I hear an Eric Clapton lilt in his voice when Rick sings that song. Chuck Shoaf, Voodoo's amazing bass player, sang "Brown Eyed Girl."  

There was a good crowd milling around at break, enjoying the outdoors bar and the deck overlooking the ocean. A really nice mix of people - from the hippie beach folk to local business people. Kent Taylor Brown and a musican friend, Nicholas from Melbourne, stopped by for a while. 

Met Donnie Coleman, (who sang a few songs), and learned that he and Jimmy Smith, the incredible lead guitar player with Voodoo, have about 8 songs on Youtube. Check it out.

After break, some of the songs Voodoo did were: Pink Floyd's, "Wish You Were Here;" some Grateful Dead such as "Ripple", "Friend of the Devil" and "West LA Fade Away." Donnie Coleman sang Gary Stewart's "An Empty Glass" and I can't begin to describe Jimmy Smith's guitar playing on that one. You've just got to hear it for yourself.

They wrapped it up with Steely Dan's "Show Business Kids." Great energy on this mostly instrumental song. Chuck did some surprising things on the bass, it looked like Rick really had it in for those drums, while Jimmy and Lee were like guitar dualing roosters in the back. Great fun and great sounds.

Wednesday and 'Where's the Music?"

Don't forget Voodoo at Waldo's on the beach this evening, Aug. 24th, starting at 7pm. ( For more about this great band, see the archives to your right and scroll down to "Wednesdays at Waldo's" dated August 18th.) 

Come on down to hear Voodoo and maybe they'll sing "Goodnight Irene" to celebrate the storm cruising on by us. Well, maybe not...

You just never know what's going to happen at Dockside Grille on Thursday night. But one thing's certain: Kent Taylor Brown will entertain us with some great songs and a variety of musical instruments. He's an excellent keyboardist and singer and then - surprise! - he's playing the saxophone and accompanying himself on the piano. Or there could suddenly be a beautiful flute melody filling the room.



Some evenings, one or two musician friends come in to jam with him. One night it's someone with a trombone, the next it may be a member of a local band playing the guitar or maybe it's a 'guest artist' who sings a few songs. You just never know. For me, it always feels like a party on Thursday night! 

So come on by Dockside at 8:30 on Thursday and run into old friends, make some new ones and enjoy the atmosphere.

Sleuthing out the music!

Stopped in at a couple of clubs beachside this morning, firming up live music schedules. Of course one of those was Waldo's on the beach. There I spoke with Lee, the guy in charge, because I wanted to know when the blues band, Nasty Habits, was playing.

I found out they are scheduled to play Waldo's, on Friday, August 26th , 8pm to 11pm.  I've heard Mike, from that group, play at a jam at the ''V" and loved his hard-hitting guitar sound and his raunchy blues singing. Also, Rick Collins, a really professional drummer and a great singer, is now with Nasty Habits. Rick is a busy guy, playing with Voodoo, Nasty Habits and various events with Kent Taylor Brown along with other appearances up and down the coast. 
Friday should be a special evening out by the pool with the sound of the ocean throwing in a little rhythm of its own.   

Also stopped by Havana Nights and confirmed with the wonderful Cynthia, that yes, they have live entertainment - piano players and singers - every night of the week.

This hotel and bar are at such a beautiful location, right off of ocean and Jasmine Ln. The tropical landscaping all around the Carribean hotel is gorgeous! When you go, be sure to tour through the restaurant downstairs before coming upstairs to the bar. Its like a tropical movie set, you will expect to run into Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall having dinner there. 

Upstairs is an intimate, classy bar with low lighting, a nicely shaped bar and dinner seating below beautiful tropical paintings of birds and palms. There is a deck for smokers and star gazers. (I'll soon link you to their site with photos.)

The entertainers are:
Bobby of Bobby and the Blisters band; Neil of the River Rats band; Antonio York bringing you New Orleans Jazz; and Lisa who does everything from Diana Krall to Sinatra.
For now, I suggest you take pot luck and enjoy them all, but I'll try to nail down who plays which night exactly.

The Sunday Jam Session

The band that hosted the jam session at the Veterans Club on Sunday was The Andrews Brothers, what I would call a country/rock band.  Albert plays drums and Allen plays guitar and both sing. The third member is the indispensable Johnny B" (Bermsderfer) on bass.  I love to watch his fingers crawl around on those strings!
Johnny told me a bit about his life and I plan to do a feature on him soon.  In fact, next time I attend an event I will take my camera so you can get a view of the guys I'm talking about.

Some of the songs the Andrews Brothers did were "Glass Half Full" which is one of my favorites; "Boot Scootin'"; "Check Yes or No" and "Fast". They also did "God is Great, Beer is Good and People are Crazy," "Born to be Bad" and the Eagle's song, "Take It Easy"

Since it was a jam session, Kevin Emmert from the band, "The Jacks", took over the drums and sang "American Dream."

All in all, an entertaining afternoon. When I was leaving, Patrick ( last name pending) had settled behind the mic with an acoustic guitar at the break and  was singing an Eagles song.

The same band will be there next Sunday. The air, I'm happy to say, was quite clear and breatheable!

Put the "V" on your calendar for Sundays. I told Tiffany, the bar tenderesse, that you all were coming and she said she'd be ready to pour you a cold one or two. And at great prices!

I asked her why the pizza was so good and she told me they were from the Swann company. Makes sense.   

End of an exciting musical week!

I must admit, after Waldo's on Wednesday, Dockside on Thursday and Kelly's on Friday, I ran out of steam and didn't make it back to Kelly's for the new karaoke Saturday night opening. I hope it was a big success and maybe someone who did go will tell me all about it.

But I am going to the weekly Sunday afternoon jam session at the Vero Beach Vets today, 4:30 to 8:30. [ On 15th avenue at 25th street, just the other side of the railroad tracks.]
I'm not sure who the core band will be, but bring your instrument or song and join in. A friend of mine plays the guitar and wants me to do a song with him. Should be interesting! 
Anyone who has been to the 'V' knows it can be a little bit smokey, but they keep the filters going and there are sections where its almost non-existant. 
Vero Beach Veterans - good people, affordable beverages and really nice pizza.   And -- great music! Dance floor, too.

This blog has only been up and running (toddling?) for a week. Improvements will happen - photos, videos and music samples are coming - it should be fun, so please visit often.

Breaking News!

Heard last night that Kelly's on Miracle Mile will have Karaoke on Saturdays from 7:30 til...?


This is new, so if you like to sing, join everybody there to kick off this new event. I might be tempted to go by myself and practice a few tunes. I always have a good time at Kelly's.


People were enjoying some delicious sandwiches last night, so you might want to go there to eat, drink and make melody tonight!

Another Great Kelly's Pub Jam!

Hello Vero's live music lovers,


Oh yeah! It was a great night at Kelly's! Vince Caporale and Ed D'Angelo of Deja Vu took us through until about eleven - they played their own great tunes and also played for everyone who wanted to sing.

Harvy Mills, a Kelly's old time regular and a wonderful singer did St. James Infirmary for us; Frank Gavin and his future ex-wife, Cindy (of the Cindy and Sandy twin set) made us all laugh with their rendition of 'Pennies from Heaven' and then - Captain Country, who we don't see enough of at Kelly's, took the floor and did some fun songs in his smoothe, understated country voice. 


And just when we thought it was all over, in breezes Kent Taylor Brown, followed by Peter Armfield and his lovely wife, Chris after a 'gig' at the Yacht Club.  The party began all over again! Vince and Eddie still going strong on drums and keyboard, Peter on bass, and Kent once again thrilling us with the sax as they did a wonderful instrumental called, I believe, Cool Man.


Wow. How can we be so lucky? One big room full of happy, dancing, smiling people, Donna and Dawn graciously serving drinks, and four excellent musicians who want nothing more than to entertain us. And we gladly let 'em.


Don't miss whatever happens next Friday at Kelly's on Miracle Mile. Deja Vu will be getting into their first song at 8pm until....? and guest singers will start sharing their special talents with the room.

Thursday night at Dockside was great fun! The 'Live Music Party' there just keeps getting better and better.

Of course, Kent Taylor Brown was rockin' the keyboards with Peter Armfield on bass. Suddenly, we had Captain Country behind the mic doing a Johnny Cash song joined by young Joe Decosa with his electric guitar. A real treat when Marschall Van Doren took over the keyboards and vocals and we got to hear Kent on the saxophone! Everybody loves it when Kent plays the sax.

By the time they got to "Johnny Be Good" couples were dancing all around the bar and we didn't wind it down until nearly midnight.

Havana Nights, across from the Chop House, (1603 Ocean Dr, 32963), has the charming Bobby (of Bobby and the Blisters) at the piano, singing in his inimitable style (sometimes he reminds me of Tom Waits) starting at between 6:30pm and 7pm.  Music goes until 12:30 in general but can end at 9:30 or 10pm in summer. Great place for an after dinner drink.  

Wednesday at Waldo's

I stopped in at Waldos on the Beach last evening at about 7pm. A big storm was brewing and the sky over the ocean was steel blue and the water was dark but beautiful. 
Voodoo was just getting ready to start their first set of the night. Said hello to Rick Collins, the amazing singing drummer, and told him how much I enjoyed meeting his wife, Jillian at VB Sports Bar on Saturday when they both sat in with Kent Taylor Brown. She is a musician also, (Fossil Rockers) among other things like - becoming a doctor!?

What an evening of music with Voodoo! Jimmy (I'll get his last name soon) is just incredible on lead guitar and Lee (ditto on the name) sang some new songs. I only stayed for two sets and I'm glad I wore flats because I stood up a lot. But I like to get right up there where I can feel the music and where I can watch Rick Collins get down on those drums and sing "Hotel California"! I'm sure the bass player (Jeff?) sang one of my favorites, "Glass Half Full" after I left, but...there's always next Wednesday at 7pm for another opportunity to hear Voodoo at Waldo's.
Note: I won't wait until I have all the info, like people's names, etc., but I will get better at finding it out before I report to you - soon! This is just another thing in life that will get better with the doing of it.

What: Variety of favorites from the 60's, 70's and 80's, Steven may do a solo performance with guitar and vocals or appear with his trio - drums and bass. Bongo Don may even back up the group with his subtle but distinct bongo sounds.

Relaxed and casual, Riverside Cafe is right on the river, a great place to see the sunset and enjoy a cold one in the company of a bunch of lively people.

What: This is a great group of 4 excellent musicians! Jimmy plays lead guitar, Lee on guitar and vocals, Jeff on bass guitar and Rick on drums. Get there early to get a seat at the bar, and you'll hear a lot of really great music and favorite songs. Between sets you can walk out and look at the ocean or have something to eat.


Waldos is a special place, a casual bar right there at the unique Driftwood Motel which is an interesting place to explore.

Hello music lovers!


I know you're eager to know about the great live music and other events that are happening in Vero Beach and beyond, so I'll do my best to find out the details and pass them on.

The curtain is up!

Hello music lovers,


Suddenly, the blog is up and running - well, limping along anyway, but - there is progress!


Keep checking in and little by little there will be news to read about local live music. My goal is not to even try to create a calendar that shows every music date in the area. It's to share with you what I've personally found and enjoyed and to let you know where and when some of the live music is happening and who the artists are who make it happen.


I still need to work out an efficient format, but fortunately someone has volunteered to help me figure this out. Her name is Sharon Morgan of SE Morgan Design (another music lover and her husband plays drums)and she is a web site wizard. So if you need any help, contact Sharon at semorgandesign@gmail.com
